Who Are We?

Since 1987, Ridgewood has helped organizations and individuals get the right message, to the right people, in the right way. From our roots as a traditional public relations agency, we have expanded our scope to meet the challenges of the changing communications landscape. Today, our clients come to us to address diverse communications challenges. We help them build and engage their community, sharpen their message and deliver it powerfully, heighten public awareness, and create innovative online solutions that help get the job done – and done well.

Reflections of a former hippie

I’ll admit it. In college, I was a left-wing, hippie radical. My friends and I wore tie-dye and bandanas, demonstrated noisily in Harvard Square, and were prone to giving each other closed-fisted salutes accompanied by cries of, “All power to the people!”

Since that time, I’ve certainly mellowed. I long ago traded my combat boots for heels, and my dreams of changing the world morphed slowly into a commitment to raising a healthy family and creating a business that does its best to support organizations that do good in the world.

But the recent successes of social media-fueled protests have brought joy to this former-hippie’s heart. The Arab Spring, of course. Then SOPA and PIPA. And now the Susan G. Koman Foundation’s reversal of their cowardly decision to throw Planned Parenthood under the bus.

It’s true. When the people speak, the world listens. And we are so fortunate to live in an era when we all have a megaphone at our fingertips.

Yes, social media can give us endlessly boring updates on what Justin Bieber ate for breakfast. And yes, bullies and brutes can use it in ways that are unconscionable. But what wonderful things can happen when the voices of the people are heard!

Ten Months with DefeatDD

In March of 2011 we began work with a brand new client.  Defeat DD is a program of the global health catalyst, PATH. DefeatDD focuses on stopping the second leading killer of children under five world-wide.  Diarrhea.

Our consultancy originally consisted of:

  • Analyzing their current social media presence
  • Crafting the voice and online brand of the program
  • Providing recommendations for achieving specific goals in social media
  • Ongoing support and guidance for social media campaigns

In addition, we were able to redesign their homepage, create a great video (below) and help design some really fun campaigns.

After completing a final report of the results of the last 10 months, we see that DefeatDD now has an enthusiastic and growing audience.  On Twitter their audience has grown by about 1,000 people and the number of real conversations they are having has risen significantly.  Part of this is due to the Poo Haiku contest they held through Twitter.

On Facebook, the program started at zero and grew an audience of 2,200 and counting.  While neither of these growth numbers are staggering, they represent a natural aggregation of friends and followers who are actually interested in helping children by preventing and treating diarrheal disease.

It’s been great working with the Poo Crew. We wish them the best!

Beautiful New The BeHive Austin Website

A client of ours, The BeHive Austin, formerly Heart House, contracted us to create a new website for them that incorporates their new branding.  Thanks to the handy work of our Art Director, Tom Baumgartner, we developed this great new look for the organization.  What do you think?

The BeHive Austin changes the lives of low income children in cities across the United States through unique and effective afterschool and summer programs.  We are proud to call them a client and we’ve really enjoyed working with them.

Their new site uses a Content Management System (CMS) called Joomla that enables them to update text, photos and videos on their site themselves.  We built the site on this platform to help keep future costs low and provide a website that can dynamically adjust to their needs.

If you would like to speak to us about developing a new website for your organization, please call (520) 318-0828 (Tucson) or (512) 637-6333 (Austin).  Or you can always email our CEO, Peter Bramley at pbramley@ridgewoodpr.com

New Video and a Close Call

This summer, we were contracted by the Boy Scouts of America Capitol Area Council to create a new video to highlight their Lost Pines Boy Scouts Camp. We spent two very good days shooting some amazing footage using our professional camera and a GoPro action camera.

While the video was in post production, the devastating hill country wild fire broke out. Fortunately, the camp was spared from the 34,000 acre blaze and the camp will be around for children to enjoy next summer.

Here is what we came up with for the project. What do you think?

Another day, another new Facebook home page.

This morning, Facebook unveiled the newest version of its home page, the page you first see upon logging in. In addition to combining the “Top News” and the “Most Recent News,” they have taken the non-status update portions of the news feed and broken them out into a separate portion of the home page. This is called the ticker and it should be ubiquitous throughout all the pages you visit within Facebook.

There are several other changes the company has made. They are highlighted in the video below and more information can be found on the Facebook Blog.

Social Media Netiquette for the Public School District

Recently, our team has been working with several schools and school districts to develop functioning social media strategies that work in the complicated environment of K-12 communications.  Below is a presentation we created to help explain what social media is and what some of the pitfalls are for its use within the public school.  There are several scenarios at the end of the presentation that demonstrate some of the potential challenges faced by educators who are trying to use social media.  Take a look at the presentation and let us know if we can help your school district get involved in social media.
